The temperature structure in this 200m x 200m x 60m piece of ocean
evolves rapidly because of intense turbulent mixing (warm: red, cool: blue).
Note the presence of horizontal cool and warm bands,
which are due to Langmuir circulations.
Langmuir circulations result from the interaction of surface
gravity waves with mean subsurface currents and enhance mixing processes in the upper ocean.
Details of the simulation
can be found in Kukulka et al. JPO (2010) and Kukulka et al. GRL (2009).
