Animations of MM5 results for the Santa Cruz Eddy (SCE)

The following animations were obtained initializing MM5 with the ETA model and using 29 vertical levels. No surface or turbulent friction is included. Ground temperature and sea surface temperature are not varying with time and they are uniform over the whole domain (=14°C). No surface fluxes of heat, moisture or momentum occur.

Horizontal loops

• Streamlines of 10-m winds, observed wind barbs [1 barb = 1 knot = 0.94 m/s] at station locations, and vertical vorticity [10^-3 s^-1, color shaded]. Terrain elevation is shown in gray shades.
• Relative humidity [%, color shaded], observed relative humidity at stations, and terrain elevation [contours every 200 m starting at 0m].
• Two-meter Temperature [°C, color shaded], observed 2-m temperature at stations, and terrain elevation [contours every 200 m starting at 0 m].
• Ten-meter wind speed [m/s, color shaded], observed 10-m wind speed at stations, and terrain elevation [contours every 200 m starting at 0 m].
• Sea level pressure [mb, color shaded], observed sea level pressure at stations, and terrain elevation [contours every 200 m starting at 0 m].

Vertical cross sections

• South-North cross sections of wind components parallel to the section (in this case, v [in m/s] and w [in cm/s]), vorticity [10^-3 s^-1], and potential temperature [°K].
• South-North cross sections of temperature [°C] and relative humidity [%].
• West-East cross sections of wind components parallel to the section (in this case, u [in m/s] and w [in cm/s]), vorticity [10^-3 s^-1], and potential temperature [°K].
• West-East cross sections of temperature [°C] and relative humidity [%].
