Underwater footage of the submersible Alvin using the Arizona State University “Chimney Snatcher” to collect a piece of smoker. Alvin then is shown releasing the University of Delaware’s Large Volume Water Sampler (LVWS) from the bottom to be retrieved at the surface. This device is used to collect large vent water samples which are then filtered for marine viruses. (Note: the just-used chimney snatcher can be seen in a green milk crate in the lower right-hand corner of the LVWS footage).

Scientists preparing the Sipper device for the next Alvin dive. It is used to collect small water samples, which then undergo chemical analysis in the shipboard lab.

Alvin tech Noel Masias gets ready for his first dive in Alvin as a pilot in training (PIT).

The swimmers make sure the sub is ready for deployment.

Alvin holds a piece of pyrite in one of the sub’s clawed manipulator arms.

View of the R/V Atlantis from the water.

The Alvin recovery process is under way as the sub makes its way to Atlantis.

The sub is almost ready to bring back aboard ship.

Scientists on Atlantis’s fantail await the return of Alvin after a dive.
Their adopted mascot, “Winchester,” is still calling the ship his temporary home.
