What is your role in Extreme 2001?

My research activities focus on thermophilic microbial communities associated with deep-sea hydrothermal chimneys. Questions about their metabolic and genetic diversity, and about their distribution and abundance in these extreme environments still remain without answer.

During the Extreme 2001 cruise, I will be interested in enrichments of hyperthermophilic methanogens, thermophilic sulfur- and/or thiosulfate-reducers, Alvinella’s epibionts, thermoacidophiles, and halophiles. Genetic diversity will be assessed by nucleic acid experiments (16rDNA phylogenetic analysis and FISH on communities retrieved from deployed modules and chimneys).
