Atlantis
is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution. It is a member of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory
System (UNOLS) fleet. The 83-meter (274-ft) ship is equipped to support
the U.S. National Deep Submergence facility, which includes the submersible
Alvin, remotely operated vehicle Jason, and towed vehicles
Argo II and DSL 120.
The
ship can carry up to 60 people, including crew, scientists, and technicians.
It features hangars for Alvin and Jason, portable labs,
a machine shop, library, laundry, and inflatable rescue boats.
