video1The Large Volume Water Sampler (LVWS) gets deployed on "the elevator." The LVWS can bring 120-liter water samples from hydrothermal vents to the surface. The samples will be used to make bacterial and viral concentrates for molecular genetic studies.

video2Dr. Cary pulls his samples from Alvin's basket and gives us a close look at a large worm (Chordata).

Check out these photos, which have been transmitted to the University of Delaware
from the R/V Atlantis.

Liz embarks, while Bruce (one of the Alvin pilots) stands by to secure Alvin.

Dr. Cary and Captain Chiljean converse while waiting for the elevator (see today's footage of the deployment) and Alvin to be recovered from the water.

Dr. George Luther takes notes as he makes observations through the port side (left) porthole of Alvin.

Dinner menu -- in my humble opinion, a gourmet fare.
