Pilot: Pat Hickey
Port Observer: Horst Felbeck
Starboard Observer: Astrid Schnetzer

Timeline:

16 : 36  (GMT) Arrive at seafloor; touched down at site with large rock formations, sulfide boulders; sited some glass sponges; no volcanic activity at site; asking Atlantis for survey to direct us to site;

X -4504                Y8017            2623m

16:57 Taking some nice pictures of sponges with 3-chip camera;

17:00  Cat food in Horst’s crab trap attracts some amphipods (purple color with large luminescent organs around their eyes); great pictures of amphipods taken with 3-chip. camera;

17:12 Getting coordinates back from the Atlantis; we landed 160m from the mount and start moving to main mount;

17:17 Arrive at main mount; observe some sea anemonies, “cold” bacterial mats, fair number of crabs; start to look for Alvinella patches, Riftia or mussels / clams

X -4272                Y8277            2598m             Heading +315

17:22 Deployment of the crab trap in a patch of rusty Riftia;

X -4247                Y8257            2579m             Heading +331

depart to look further for Alvinella site

17:35  Arrive at suitable Alvinella patch on mount (crab trap visible through starboard window; pictures taken)

            X -4250                Y8254            2576m             Heading +336

18:30 Starting ARTY Alvinella collection from the same site and targeted the hot area measured with the sippers.

ARTY chamber 1 (all the way to the left): collected ~ 7 worms from the patch where sipper temps ranged from 35 – 80degrees Celsius.

ARTY chamber 2 (middle one): collected ~5 worms from same area – sipper temps where 30 – 45 degrees Celsius.

19:06 Moving on to look for additional Alvinella patch;

19:46 After flooding chamber 3 the temp of the diffuse flow is taken at the crevice right next to the Alvinella patch.

19:52 – 19:57 Collection of Alvinella clumps at same site into Biobox. After collection we start off on the lookout for Riftia or hot sulfides with bacterial mats. To this point no clams or mussels are sited.

20:10 Arrive at a Riftia patch; tubes look very rusty;

20:17 – 20:22 ~ 19 Riftias are collected and put into the grey biobox.

X -4239                Y8212            2562m

Starting to head back to pick up the crab trap.

20:27 – 20:30 Crab trap is being collected and put into white biobox.

X -4247                Y8257            2579m

After collection we start moving on the lookout for hot sulfide and bacterial mat.

20:44 Spot suitable sulfide for collection with small smokers associated.

X -4210                Y8281            2581m             Heading +55

20:46 – 20:55 Sulfide collection. To avoid contamination of the sulfide samples the crab trap is moved to the grey biobox and the sulfide is transferred into the white biobox.

20:56 Taking temp at collection site with Hi Temp probe: 298 degrees Celsius

20:57 Some more sulfide is added to the top of the basket.

20:59 Weights dropped and heading back to surface
