Here's the real star of Extreme 2004! Check out this Pompeii worm (Alvinella pompejana). Be sure to note the bright red gills and the fuzzy appearance of its back. That fuzziness is actually the bacterial fleece that is a major focus of our research.

 

Check out this video of a vent crab being collected and deposited in Alvin's biobox. Note how the pilot uses the two manipulators like arms to deposit the crab for a safe ride to the surface. Once the crab reached the surface, it was put in a repressurizing chamber for further study.
