Dr. Horst Felbeck feeds argon into a tube while Steffi adds trophosomes to percol fluid. Argon is heavier than air, so it keeps the air out of the tube. These are just a few steps on the Riftia bacteria's path to Horst's lab back at Scripps Institute, where he'll use them to try to understand the vent environment.
