About Us

The Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant NetworkThis Web site is designed to provide the public with research-based information about the horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus), a major Mid-Atlantic resource. The site is a collaboration of the Sea Grant programs in the Mid-Atlantic region, led by the University of Delaware Sea Grant College Program and funded by the National Sea Grant College Program in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Department of Commerce.

Based at academic institutions across the United States, the Sea Grant network encourages the wise stewardship of marine resources through research, education, outreach, and technology transfer. The nationwide program serves as a partner and bridge between government, academia, industry, scientists, and private citizens to help Americans understand and sustainably use our precious ocean and Great Lakes resources for long-term economic growth and prosperity.

We are grateful to the numerous individuals who contributed to the development, review, and support of this Web site, including Kirstin Ferrari-Wakefield, who earned her M.S. at the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment working on horseshoe crab artificial bait research with her adviser, Nancy Targett; David Barczak, Tracey Bryant, Pam Donnelly, Kari Gulbrandsen, William Hall, and James Falk from Delaware Sea Grant; Jack Greer, Dan Jacobs, and Doug Lipton from Maryland Sea Grant; Kim Kosko and Mike Danko from New Jersey Sea Grant; Antoinette Clementson from New York Sea Grant; Jack Thigpen and Katie Mosher from North Carolina Sea Grant; Ann Faulds from Pennsylvania Sea Grant; Sally Mills, Pauli Fitzgerald, and William DuPaul from Virginia Sea Grant; Tom Meyer from NOAA Fisheries; and Jim Murray from the National Sea Grant College Program.

The Cattail Company in Elkton, Maryland, assisted with the Web site's development. We thank them for their contributions, as well as J. R. Woodward for his photographs of migratory shorebirds and Dr. Hirokai Sugita for his photographs of the Japanese horseshoe crab.
