HORSESHOE CRAB SURVEY

PROCEDURES FOR 2 PERSON TEAM:
A Recorder and a Counter

  1. Using a 20 meter rope (1/4 or 3/8 diameter) choose two numbers from chart and mark respective meters on the 20 meter rope (electric or duct tape works well). Determine which end of beach will be the start point.

  2. Starting at the designated beach point, the stationary recorder holds the end from which the meters were marked while the counter walks to the first designated meter marker.

  3. Lay the meter square counter down on the area to be censused making sure that the square is on the near side of the marker and count. Call out the numbers to the recorder.

  4. Walk to the next marker and repeat.

  5. Walk to stretch out the length of the rope and mark the beach with your foot (draw a line).

  6. Both move. The line on the beach become the stationary spot for the recorder. Repeat the process until the kilometer is completed.
