The 2006 College of Marine Studies' Desk Calendar
Get a jump start on your gift shopping with a 2006 desk calendar from the University of Delaware College of Marine Studies. New this year, the calendar is presented in a slim plastic case — similar in size to a CD case — that opens to form a display stand for the 12 monthly calendar cards inside, which also makes it convenient to “snap it shut” and carry it with you.
The front of the calendar features a photograph of the Harbor of Refuge Light in Lewes, Delaware, with the important dates of 2006 listed on the back. Each monthly card features a stunning photo of a Delaware coastal treasure such as sanderlings, the “wind-up” toys of the shorebird world; a diamondback terrapin turtle; summertime at Rehoboth Beach, nicknamed the “Nation’s Summer Capital”; and a colorful marsh hibiscus flower. Information about each subject is noted on the back of the card as well as room for making important dates.
February features an up-close picture of a blue crab. On the back, you learn that not only does this feisty crustacean form the basis of one of the most valuable fisheries along the U.S. Atlantic Coast, but also watermen say the female crab “paints her nails” on account of her red claw tips. The month of May features a timely photo of Delaware’s state marine animal — the horseshoe crab. During the spring time, the largest concentration of horseshoe crabs in the world can be found spawning on the beaches along the Delaware Bay.
The 2006 desk calendar was produced by the University of Delaware College of Marine Studies and the Delaware Sea Grant College Program. It costs $6.00, plus $1.50 for shipping and handling, and is available from the Marine Public Education Office in Newark at (302) 831-8083 or the Delaware Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service in Lewes at (302) 645-4346.
