A special event this spring will highlight seafood safety and preparation and introduce attendees to the University of Delaware’s College of Marine and Earth Studies (CMES). The event will be held Tuesday, May 13. It will begin with a tour of UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes and will include an hourlong seafood seminar and tasting.
“This event will be an opportunity for people to get a close-up view of the research being done in the college as well as to learn more about integrating seafood into their diets,” said Doris Hicks, seafood specialist with the Delaware Sea Grant College Program.
During the tour attendees will see the cutting-edge facilities where CMES marine biosciences and oceanography research is performed. Attendees will see exhibits highlighting how UD scientists study extreme marine environments such as the frigid, ice-covered seas of the Antarctic. They also will see how scientists are working to address local issues, such as the impacts of land development on Delaware water quality and wildlife.
Hicks will present the seafood seminar for the event. “Seafood At Its Best” will provide an introduction to seafood handling and preparation, discuss seafood’s role in the diet, and provide a sampling of a local seafood-based recipe.
