Martin Clifford

Postdoctoral researcher

My current role within the University of Delaware's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy incorporates an increasingly wide scope of aspects relating to mining, sustainability, transparency and corporate social responsibility in primary commodity industries, particularly the extractives sector. The main focus of my research at UDel, however, is to broaden existing knowledge of how CSR and environmental management-related decisions are diagnosed and implemented in the mining sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

This both expands and complements my broader research interests, which focus on the role and impacts of large and small-scale extractive industries in lower income countries. I have strong experience in the socioeconomic and environmental dynamics of both artisanal and large-scale mining, with particular attention towards Sub-Saharan Africa. This feeds into a broader interest in sustainable natural resource management in the same region and elsewhere in the world.

Previously, I studied in the U.K, earning a PhD in International & Rural Development at the University of Reading, an MSc in Environment & Development at the University of Manchester and a BSc in Human Geography at the University of Edinburgh. I have also worked as a risk analyst and independent consultant on reports for multilateral agencies and multinational corporations.
