1) The origins of subduction zone magmas in subduction zones, particularly primitive and primary magmas and the relations between these magmas and tectonics. 

2)Melt inclusion formation and evolution.  Correlation between melt inclusion compositional populations and crystallization histories (including application of CSD techniques)

3)Microprobe techniques for analysis of melt inclusions.  Developing standards for comparison to other microbeam techniques and comparisons to whole rock compositions.

4)Relations of tectonics and magmatism in convergent margins preserved in Appalachia  terrane boundaries.

GEOL 108 - Volcanoes and Earthquakes (Winter, Spring 2008)

The nature, causes and origins of volcanic and earthquake activity, their interactions with humans and their potential control

GEOL 112 - Earth Resources and Public Policy

This course first provides background on the geologic occurrence of such resources as water, energy, metals and industrial minerals. What follows is a discussion of politics and economics of resource extraction and utilization and environmental implications of resource use.

GEOL 300 - Earth Materials I: Minerals (Fall 2006)

A comprehensive introduction to the systematics, identification, properties and associations of minerals.  Field trip to local mineral deposits.

GEOL 302 - Earth Materials II: Petrology (current semester S09)

A comprehensive introduction to the identification, description, tectonic setting, and origins of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Includes laboratory exercises using petrography.  Field trip to examine the rocks of the Blue Ridge at Shenandoah NP.

GEOL 305 – The Earth’s Lithosphere I: Structural Geology and Plate Tectonics (Fall 2008) Examination of the important structures in the crust and their relation to stress, strain, Plate Tectonics and Earth’s history.  Field trip to examine structures of the Appalachians at Harper’s Ferry, WV, Sideling Hill MD, practice with field methods.
