Wind Speed The purple, red and dark blue areas are winds over 7.5 meters/sec (16.6 mph), more profitable and thus potentially good candidates for early development of wind turbines.
For offshore use, only these areas are considered on the combined maps that follow.
Superficially, these maps appear to include only ocean winds--that is not true. Rather, they show wind speeds over both land and ocean.
In the US East Coast, as in much of the coastal areas of the world, the
large wind power resource is over ocean rather than over land. In fact, the map stops at 50 nautical miles,
where many areas are just moving into dark blue (class 7, or year-round average of 8.8 m/sec); thus, there is much more energy resource farther
out than is shown here.
