Who can participate?
Our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers the opportunity for undergraduate students from around the nation to participate in a summer research program. Participants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students. Students from community colleges, institutions with limited research opportunities and from underrepresented groups in ocean science as defined by the National Science Foundation (African-Americans/Blacks, Hispanic Americans, Asians, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and Native Pacific Islanders), are especially encouraged to apply. Please note that applicants must be US Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents. In addition, they must be enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelor's degree. Students who will receive their degree prior to August 2020 are not eligible.
Overview
Interns will work with faculty and research staff in a research-intensive atmosphere on a research topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology, marine geology, or marine biogeochemistry. Students will develop their project under the guidance of their faculty mentor (see previous Summer Research Projects and assigned advisors) and will present written and oral reports at the end of the summer. Interns will also attend weekly research seminars, professional development presentations and field trips to nearby coastal marine systems.
Where does the Program take place?
The marine science internship program takes place at the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment in the beach community of Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. This modern campus is located on the shores of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Henlopen State Park. Research and teaching facilities are available in Lewes, which is linked by computer and interactive TV to the main campus in Newark. Accommodations for interns are provided at the Daiber Housing Complex, which is comprised of 28 three-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom, semi-detached ranch houses. All units are fully furnished with dishes, pots and pans, washer, dryer, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. The complex is less than 2 miles from the Hugh R. Sharp Campus and within walking distance of downtown Lewes.
